all this from a coffee mug and a spoon [Apr. 6th, 2006|02:41 am]

recently i was making some coffee during an all night session of movie-watching and paper writing when i realised something. the clanking of the spoon in the mug as i stirred the sugar and non-dairy creamer reminded me of childhood. every good friday or holy saturday for just about thirteen years, my family would color easter eggs. i can recall the entire process vividly. From the large pot that my mom would hard boil the eggs in to how we washed our hands afterwards. Every year there would be one or two eggs that would basically crack, but not break, in the boiling water and the egg white would jut out of the shell. those were the first eaten and obviously not eligible for coloring. different smells were associated with the coloring. most of the years, we would have the color pellets that would dissolve in vinegar, so it was not necessarily a good smell, but we dealt with it anyway. we had these 'cool' coffee mugs that said any number of things like 'love' in psychedelic type, ones with fake street signs that said stuff like 'handle with care' and soft shoulders.' (we color the eggs in these mugs). of course we would fight over the best colors and who would get to dissolve the blue pellet or the red pellet. this is where the spoon clanking would first be heard. stirring the solution, thinking that the pellets would dissolve faster and therefore letting us color the eggs faster.
we would do eggs with just one color, dip half in one color and the other half in another, drop the eggs in one color, let it dry and then go for a second and sometimes a third. we thought of every possibility... or at least we thought that we thought of every possibility. we would let the eggs dry on cooling racks with paper towels lined underneath. there was also the clear crayon that would add to the mayhem. my dad would always write obnoxious things on the eggs like 'cholesterol bomb' or 'bill cartwright's egg.' i was always terrible at writing on the eggs because you couldnt see what or where you were writing and the oval surface was not kind to my sloppy writing. after we were all done, our hands were obviously covered with egg dye. after we packed the eggs away, we would dip the paper towels in the dye and make 'pretty designs.' we would tire of that eventually and have to wash our hands. we used this stuff called 'goop' in this little tub. it looked and felt like lard, but after about ten minutes of scrubbing, there was no trace of the red and green and blue stains that seemed like they would be permanent. we all got too old for coloring eggs, but it was definitely fun while it lasted.

i never liked hard-boiled eggs.

some things [Feb. 21st, 2006|01:26 am]

i found the headline to this story to be darkly amusing. for those who choose not to click, it reads "girl who needed liver transplant dies."

i know that after reading the article, it was mildly news-worthy, but the idea that hundreds of people die everyday without getting transplants and the headline making it seem like this is an abnormal occurance is sorta funny.

the film "the celebration" is very intense and shocking. when i first rented it, i was intrigued by it and the whole dogme movement, but wasnt interested in the subject. however, this film is brilliant through and through.

i finally saw "videodrome" and that was great as well. "eXistenZ" was interesting, not great, but really fun to write about.

in one of my blow-off intro film classes, we had to write about the strangest film that we have seen projected. I was tempted to write about something i hadnt seen on the big screen, but i was a good boy and chose "un chien andalou." other people in the class chose such "strange" films as kill bill, pi, house of a thousand corpses and some others. its really sad to see how uninformed some people are in terms of film... but i am a crazy film major, so i may just be over-reacting.

i am going to apply to a four week program in france right after this school year ends to finish my last requirement. hopefully i get in.

and oh, the negative version of that test i posted a little bit ago: http://kevan.org/nohari?name=immobilisme

its 622 and i havent slept.

as it stands, no film will ever touch hiroshima mon amour. i could write for pages and pages about it and i will when i have the chance.

l'avventura isnt too shabby either.

playlist of todd:

charalambides- our bed is green
the millennium- begin
espers- espers
ghost- hypnotic underworld
m83- before the dawn heals us
a song or two from the electronic bright eyes cd... please dont hate me.
bonnie prince billy- i see a darkness
keith fullerton whitman- antithesis
blue cheer

i drank some coffee and it is ravaging my stomach.

i am supposed to go out drinking tonight and i am not looking forward to it. i am going to be so tired.

caitlin... i understand your love for martha's apprentice. its amazing in a way.

also, on the subject of caitlin. i need wallpaper from the 70's in my house.

on that humor test, i got "the ham." although it said that i would like actors like will smith (which is so wrong), it was so right about all the terribly lame jokes i somehow get away with.

the weather is getting cold, so i have the chance to wear my sweaters and such... which makes me unreasonably happy. i need a brown sweater. i am thinking about selling some dvds and buying a nice one from from j. crew. not too nice though.

although i know some people will scoff, i have to say that i have the most wonderful girlfriend.

the white sox are gonna make the playoffs, even if they just limp their way in. but hey, i am optimistic. contreras has his fastball going and mark b. has his command back. even podsednik is looking good on the base paths. dare i hope for some second round action? yes.

love love

i figured that it was about time that i updated.

i somehow have worked my way to the position of calendar editor for the buzz magazine on campus. i seem to have all this experience with magazines, but i dont know if i want to go into that sort of thing.

http://www.abelardomorell.net/ this guy does the most fantastic photographs. he turns rooms into camera obscuras. he has an exhibit at the art institute and i will make it there sometime before it closes on october 16.

i have been writing a lot, but nothing creative. everything is journalism or papers or criticism. maybe someday i will find the time to start over. and i should take some time with my camera.

i want to make a silent b&w expressionistic film.

i have too many ideas and no time and no resources.
